Cornas

Cornas is a northern Rhône appellation, located between Saint-Joseph to the north and Saint-Péray to the south, along the right bank of the Rhône river. It is renowned for the production of red wines made exclusively from Syrah. The appellation has several distinctive terroirs, going by the names Reynard, Geynale, Chaillot and Patou. Granite is the predominant rock of these terroirs. The wines of Cornas have had AOC status since 1936 and are said to have been appreciated by Louis XV, Saint Louis and even Charlemagne. The vineyards stretch out across south-east-facing slopes. Whole bunches may be used to make the wines which are often matured in foudres (large tuns) or barriques (small oak barrels). On tasting, intense notes of black fruit stand out. In terms of palate, Cornas is a full-bodied wine with a prominent tannic backbone. Cornas is known for producing wines with good ageing potential.

Several names feature on the iDealwine website, including Auguste Clape, Thierry Allemand and Alain Voge as well as Yves Cuilleron, Domaine du Coulet-Matthieu Barret and Domaine du Tunnel.
