Beaujolais | 2023 vintage
Weather conditions
The year began calmly, with average temperatures and humidity. Budding started in early April, followed by mild, rainy weather until mid-May, then a drier and warmer spell through early June that encouraged high-quality flowering.
Summer was marked by contrasts, with July heat, a relatively cool August, and hailstorms that impacted yields, particularly in Morgon, Chiroubles, Régnié, Fleurie, and some Beaujolais Villages areas such as Beaujeu and Lantignié.
High heat in the second half of August caused drought in several vineyards, especially those with young vines.
Harvest
Harvests began on 28th August for Chardonnay and 1st September for Gamay. Cool nights played a key role in preserving acidity and energetic fruit.
Profile of the wine
While quantities are limited in some areas, the wines show an appealing and classic profile. Gamay cuvées express precise red fruit notes (raspberry and redcurrant), with elegant, balanced, and pleasantly acidic mouthfeel.
Compared to 2022, the 2023 wines are more flavourful and easy-drinking, combining juiciness and bite with spicy and floral notes. Top producers achieved dense mouthfeel and strong acidic structure, promising good ageing potential. White wines stand out for the intensity of their fruit.
