Ardmore viene fondata nel 1889 da Adam Teacher, figlio di William Teacher, nell'Aberdeenshire. Nei dintorni della distilleria è presente tutto ciò che occorre per produrre il whisky: acqua, torbiere e campi d’orzo. Nel 1976, la distilleria opera una fusione con il gruppo Allied Distillers, poi con Beam (Beam Suntory dal 2014) nel 2006. È una delle ultime a riscaldare gli alambicchi con il carbone fino al 2001, ed è anche una delle rare distillerie delle Highlands a produrre whisky torbato. Dato che la distilleria ha sempre prodotto il blend Teachers anziché proporre un single malt, le bottiglie commerciali sono molto ricercate dagli appassionati, che apprezzano lo stile singolare di Ardmore.
